Santa Barbara City Council is looking for a place to put a sanctioned campground

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara City Council is looking for a parking lot that would allow people to live in a sanctioned campground with services and bathrooms through the summer.

The arson suspect, a 23-year-old Santa Barbara man, was experiencing homelessness.

Some council members seemed upset it took a nearly 9-acre fire to get to this point.

City staff is being asked to come up with a few parking lots to consider before one is chosen.

Some residents said they are concerned about the 'not in my backyard' mentality, but they say the fire danger is too high to not to do something.

The council meets again in two weeks.

In Isla Vista, unhoused individuals were given a 10-day notice to vacate a park. People staying at that park need to be out by June 1, creating even more pressure for the local community find a place for these people experiencing homelessness.
