Commuter lot eyed for future moderate income housing

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.

The Santa Barbara City Council heard public comments about housing before voting in favor of developing a tree-lined commuter lot on the corner of Carillo and Castillo near Mission Creek

Housing Authority director Rob Fredericks said they would work to save the giant Tipuana trees.

He said the goal is to meet the needs of moderate income workers.

"They unanimously approved moving forward the development concept for the Carrillo Castillo Commuter Lot."

The sight could help city workers in the missing middle income bracket.

"Eighty-to-100 percent of medium income don't qualify for low income housing programs, but also can't afford the market," said Fredericks.

It was one of the last votes for retiring council member Randy Rowse.

Rowse said he likes the work the housing authority has done.

The city will retain ownership of the property.

The maximum density plan means parking issues need to be worked out.
