New SLO holiday banners honoring diverse cultural celebrations
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The streets of San Luis Obispo are now lined with holiday banners that honor and recognize several traditional end-of-the-year holiday celebrations in different cultures.
The brightly colored signs are mostly visible in the downtown area, but also around Railroad Square and along Monterey Street to Grand Ave.
There's about 150 banners, each representing one of eight cultural celebrations observed in the community, including Christmas, New Year's, Hanukkah, Buena Noche, Kwanzaa, kadomatsu, Assalamu Alaikum and Chinese or Lunar New Year.
The project is the work of the City's Promotional Coordinating Committee, in coordination with Downtown SLO.
The holiday artworks is the second collection in the banner art series.
The idea behind the holiday signs is to celebrate San Luis Obispo's diversity and inclusion, and also provide visitors and residents with a sense of welcoming.
"They demonstrate the vibrancy of our community and convey a sense of welcome, diversity, and inclusion to both visitors and residents," said San Luis Obispo Tourism Manager Molly Cano. "They depict bold interpretations of end-of-year cultural celebrations observed in our community.
In addition, the City has also created downloaded coloring sheets that depict all of the banners.
People of all ages can create their own colorful version of signs, while also learning more about the various cultural celebrations they depict.
There are also sidewalk stickers located below crosswalk signals through the downtown area the include a QR code where people can also receive information on the celebrations.
Later this month, on Dec. 18, San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation will host a scavenger hunt for posters that will be hidden at different parks located throughout the city, including Meadow Park, De Vaul Park, Islay Park, Throop Park and Sinsheimer Park.
