Doctors share how to stay safe while celebrating July 4th during COVID-19 pandemic

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Marian Regional Medical Center doctors say during the past two holiday weekends, they have seen spikes in COVID-19 cases.

That has them concerned about the Fourth of July.

“Over the last month or so we’ve had two big holidays both Memorial Day and Father’s Day. Obviously we have some concerns over what we’ve seen over the past," said Dr. Scott Robertson with the Marian Regional Medical Center.

Now there’s a spike of COVID-19 cases in the Santa Maria community.

"We certainly know when people are getting together and they’re not wearing masks or doing social distancing, then that is where the coronavirus starts to spread," said Robertson.

Doctors say if we all do our part we can reduce coronavirus cases in our community.

They're asking everyone to use common sense.

"Continue to use a mask whenever they’re out in public. If they have to go into groups, try to make the groups as small as possible. Keep your social distancing of at least six feet, and as always, remember to wash your hands," said Robertson.

City leaders are also urging people to maintain a physical distance.

"Some people may have the attitude that we’re done with COVID-19. But it’s important to remember that it is not done with us. It’s still here. We need to continue wearing a mask and keeping a physical distance. It’s not just for yourself. It’s also for your family, your friends and your loved ones to keep them protected," said Mark van de Kamp with the City of Santa Maria.

They're advising whatever Independence Day plans may be, if anyone is feeling any symptoms at all, doctors say they should stay home.
