Historic WWI Memorial Rededicated to Honor 68 Fallen Santa Barbara Soldiers

SUMMERLAND, Calif. — Nearly a century after 68 Santa Barbara soldiers lost their lives in World War I, their sacrifice is being remembered through a restored memorial near Loon Point.

Community members, veterans and local leaders gathered Thursday for a rededication ceremony honoring the men who died while serving their country in 1917 and 1918.

The original tribute dates back to 1928, when 70 oak trees were planted near Loon Point, with individual names honoring the fallen soldiers.

Over time, freeway construction displaced the trees, leaving an important piece of Santa Barbara history at risk of being forgotten.

New memorial panels now preserve that history and recognize the service members whose lives were cut short.

Congressman Salud Carbajal joined the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of preserving the tribute after freeway improvements displaced some of the original trees.

“There were some improvements made to the freeway, that displayed some of the oak trees, that were planted in their honor by local groups, so because of that displacement we had to find a way to honor their memory and make sure that wasn’t lost,” Carbajal said.

John Blankenship of the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation also helped organize the ceremony, bringing together military veterans and community leaders to recognize the fallen.

The gathering included patriotic music, remarks from local officials and moments of reflection honoring those who never returned home.

For many in attendance, the restored memorial offers future generations a chance to learn about the sacrifices made by Santa Barbara residents during the First World War.

Although the original trees are gone, the names and stories of the 68 fallen soldiers will remain part of the community’s history.

Nearly 100 years later, their sacrifice has not been forgotten.
