PG&E Starts Power Line Replacements to Reduce Wildfire Risk in SLO County

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - PG&E crews in San Luis Obispo County started work today on a multi-purpose project in Avila Beach, and areas near the Bob Jones Trail.

The project will update power lines to increase reliability and capacity while reducing wildfire risk.

Traffic mitigation signs are set up on San Luis Bay Drive between Ontario Road and Avila Market.

Crews will remove about 3,600 feet of overhead power lines and replace them with 7,200 feet of insulated underground lines.

“We're going to be installing new devices that are able to isolate problems on a power line, so that if there is an issue, then the number of customers that are impacted by an outage are significantly fewer,” says PG&E spokesperson Stephanie Magallon. “And then we're also going to be under-grounding a portion of the power lines along the Bob Jones Trail.”

The project is expected to last until December.
