Los Olivos teen raised $10k in three days for L.A. fire relief
LOS OLIVOS, Calif. - A local high school senior has raised over ten thousand dollars in three days for L.A. fire relief.
A Dunn high school senior and his friend felt they had to act as they watched large portions of Los Angeles county burn in devastating wildfires last week.
But they knew they needed help to get started.
Aliyah Redding and his friend Kyle Godwin partnered with “Another Awesome Day," a non-profit focusing on teen mental health.
“We've been doing work in L.A. So Aliyah, one of the trusted adults in his life reached out and said, Is there a way that we can support Aliyah? And so that's really how the conversation came, was just active brainstorming,” says Shana Douglass, founder of “Another Awesome Day.”
Together they created “Teens 4 L.A.” - a digital fundraiser that has grown to five figures in only three days.
“Using the power of crypto, we were able to mobilize so much support in just three days we were able to raise $10,000,” says Aliyah Redding.
Thanks to the infrastructure of “Another Awesome Day’s” platform, “Teens 4 L.A.” has leveraged currencies from around the world, including cryptocurrency.
“We are a decentralized Web-three kind of native community. What that means for us is we're leveraging a global community, global currencies, to rapidly raise awareness and deploy funds in spaces that students don't really have the opportunity to go,” says Douglass.
With the help of his teachers at Dunn School here in Los Olivos, Aliyah plans to hold a physical donation event on campus, to welcome donations from those without access to the latest technology.
“My best hope is to, raise money for my school and be able to rebuild the schools that, I used to go to and then, hopefully continue it to become a larger initiative, hopefully across the state or I think globe would be cool,” says Redding.
The campaign remains open, the QR codes active, and anyone is encouraged to donate to “Teens 4 L.A.,” regardless of where you are on the globe.
