Lompoc City Council votes 5 to 0 in favor of Public Safety Commission proposals

LOMPOC, Calif. - The Lompoc City Council voted 5 to 0 to move forward on the Public Safety Commissions proposals.

Keon King is one of several Lompoc residents who came to the meeting concerned about safety.

“There has been shootings, stabbings and carjackings in the last few months,” King said.

The commission’s proposal includes increasing the number of meeting dates from quarterly to monthly, and adopting a surveillance camera registration program allowing local businesses to register their surveillance cameras on a list kept by the police department.

Another proposal is to adopt a program to assist neighborhood watch programs.

“I have friends who have been victims. My hope is to fund the police department and get a gang enforcement and do some sweeps,” said resident Kimberly Coy of Lompoc.

While several residents who came to the meeting were pleased with city council's motion on the proposals, King said he's not sure if these measures are enough to ensure safety for the community.

“I think the cameras will help out but honestly I think they just need more police here and they need some sort of gang enforcement,” King said.
