4 migrants died trying to reach an eastern Greek island in a small boat that sank

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece’s coast guard says four people have died and five others have been rescued after a boat carrying migrants sank off the island of Samos. The coast guard says five other people were rescued from the sea after the accident on Monday. Another 26 who had safely made it to the shore were later found on land. A large search and rescue operation by air, land and sea is continuing. That’s because survivors said it’s possible that one or two people might still be missing. Greece lies along one of the most popular routes into the European Union for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
