New Mexico officer fatally stabbed before a witness shoots and kills suspect, police say

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a New Mexico police officer has died after being stabbed by a suspect who was apparently shot and killed by a witness to the attack. The Las Cruces Police Department says Patrol Officer Jonah Hernandez was stabbed at least once Sunday afternoon after responding to a report of a trespasser. Police say a 29-year-old male suspect was apparently shot and killed by the witness. The witness used the officer’s police radio to call for help afterward, but Hernandez died after being taken to a Las Cruces hospital. Police did not immediately release the names of the suspect or the witness.
