Santa Barbara police K9 to receive Mayoral Proclamation

Santa Barbara police dog Jake will be honored next Tuesday as he rides into retirement after six years on the job.

Jake will receive a Mayoral Proclamation at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The 8-year-old Czech German Shepard mix and his partner/handler Sergeant Chris Payne took part in 237 narcotics sniffs, 169 building seaches, 71 apprehensions and 52 area searches. Police say the sweet tempered boy could often get criminals to surrender after just a few intimidating barks.

After retiring, Jake will transition into becoming the Payne family dog. Sgt. Payne will make a ceremonial donation to the city to complete the adoption.

The Santa Barbara Police Department is now working to find new dogs for the K9 program, which is funded mostly by private donations.
