ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — State environment officials will be offering residents in eastern New Mexico and personnel at Cannon Air Force Base the opportunity to have their blood tested for PFAS chemicals. The compounds also known as “forever chemicals” have been detected at military bases in New Mexico and around the United States. Experts have estimated cleanup costs will top billions of dollars. New Mexico is among the states to sue over cleanup at air force bases and other locations. Officials at Cannon are in the process of determining the nature and extent of contamination on and off the base. They have plans for eventually building a treatment plant.
