More Sonic Science From Vandenberg’s First Mission Update

LOMPOC, Calif. (KEYT) - Vandenberg held their first "Mission Update" discussion last week, where information was presented to the public regarding the impacts of the base's increased launches.

Col. Horne said the physics of launches are literally being written as they proceed.

He announced that launches will not be slowing down, but the impacts are being thoroughly studied, fueled by goals of mitigation.

Brigham Young Physics professor heads the ECOBOOM research, and he says the last 18 months of study has revealed some surprises.

Using devices that measure the decibel levels of sound, understanding has been gained of what constitutes noise and how it affects the environment.

Sonic booms are similar a boat’s wake, and are steered by weather conditions, particularly wind.

A community member asked about remuneration for property damages due to launches.

Col. Horne’s assistant announced there is a website pathway to file a claim which would go to the vendor.

A claim would have to provide proof the particular vendor’s launch caused the damage.
