Off-duty police officer killed in Oxnard crash
OXNARD, Calif. - Oxnard police said off-duty officer Nathan Martin, 45, was killed in a crash when his own motorcycle was cut off by a tractor trailer a mile from the police station.
The police department first responded to the crash around 4 p.m. on 3rd Street between Marquita and Campton, near Colonia Park.
The officer was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Martin was Hueneme High school's resource officer. He was a 20-year veteran of the Oxnard Police Department. He is survived by his wife and three children.
“He had many friends within the department,” Oxnard Police Chief Scott Whitney said. “I know his kids. He was a good man, and he’s going to be missed.”
Officer Martin held a variety of assignments during his career at the Police Department including patrol officer, property crimes investigator and traffic officer.
"He worked hard for the city. He was committed to his job. The students at Hueneme High School love him," Whitney said.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
A large procession was held around 7 p.m. at VCMC. Dozens of police officers were seen lining the entrance of the hospital.
