Bicyclist hospitalized with serious injuries after vehicle swerves into Oxnard bike lane

OXNARD, Calif. - A bicyclist was hospitalized with critical injuries Friday night after a car reportedly swerved into the bike lane while avoiding another vehicle.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. on East 5th Street east of Rose Avenue in Oxnard.
Oxnard police and EMS personnel responded to the scene to investigate and treat the injured bicyclist.
Officers determined that a 2017 BMW 330i driven by a 19-year-old Camarillo man was traveling west on Rose Avenue when an unidentified tractor-trailer traveling east on Fifth Street suddenly swerved into the westbound lanes.
They said BMW attempted to avoid the tractor-trailer by swerving into the bike lane of the road where it struck a bicyclist that was traveling west on 5th Street.
The bicyclist, only identified as a man, was seriously injured and transported to Ventura County Medical Center.
The 19-year-old driver of the BMW did not sustain injuries and remained at the scene to help the bicyclist.
Officers said they were not able to find the tractor-trailer that had swerved into the westbound lane.
Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in this crash.
