Santa Barbara’s Karpeles Museum Moves From Local to Global Stage

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - For decades, visitors have come to the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum to stand inches from history.

Letters from Albert Einstein, fragments of the Declaration of Independence, and relics from the Apollo missions offered an intimate connection to the past — all free to the public.

Now, the Santa Barbara location will close its doors for the final time on April 5th.

Thousands of manuscripts are relocating to Florida, while others go online, expanding access worldwide.

City leaders acknowledge the loss. “It’s disappointing to lose something so unique here… this was part of our cultural identity,” said Oscar Gutierrez of the Santa Barbara City Council.

Even as the physical space prepares to close, the museum’s mission endures.

Visitors can continue exploring the collection online, ensuring the stories preserved in its manuscripts reach an audience far beyond Santa Barbara.
