The Harbor Snack Shack serves up hot dogs with a side of memories
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Hot Dogs are a staple on hot summer days, and the Santa Barbara Harbor Snack Shack is serving up delicious dogs with a side of memories.
"It's a quick snack. It's an American tradition first of all, and it's been around for years, and it's quick and convenient and you're finished," said Richard Lawrence, owner of the Snack Shack.
Lawrence and his wife, Dolly, came out of retirement over 20 years ago to take over the Snack Shack. Lawrence says he relishes meeting all the people that come by the store, which he points out has a great view of the harbor.
"We have some of the greatest people in the world coming here, and especially the boating community. They're just fabulous people."
National Hot Dog Day is Wednesday, July 18 and for $6 customers can get an All-Beef Hebrew National hot dog served on a warmed-up bun.
In addition to a quick savory treat, Lawrence takes a quick picture of first-time customers holding their hot dogs. From the windows to the walls, the Shack is smothered in pictures of smiling faces holding their delectable dogs.
"We had a couple of celebrities come in, so I asked them if I could take their picture," said Lawrence. "It seemed to be kind of popular."
Lawrence says he hopes one day Oprah will stop by the Shack to pick up a snack.
Doug Henderson stopped by the Shack to pick up two scoops of old world spumoni gelato and says the Snack Shack is very affordable and makes for a great date night.
"You could bring your wife here, have a hot dog, get gelato, and you're out of here for under 15 bucks," said Henderson.
The Santa Barbara Harbor Snack Shack is located is near the harbor's launch ramp and is open 7 days a week.
