Squatter removed from residence in Isla Vista with help from sheriff’s deputies

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies removed a squatter from a rental property in Isla Vista after he initially refused to leave the property.

It happened at a rental property on the 800 block of Camino Del Sur in Isla Vista.

The owners of the residence said they were checking the property to make sure it was ready for the upcoming school year when they discovered a man squatting inside the building. The property owners contacted law enforcement after the man refused to let them into the residence.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies arrived on scene and tried to get the man to come out on his own, but he refused.

According to our reporter on scene, the sheriff's office used tear gas to get the man to surrender.

He eventually came out of the building and was detained by law enforcement. The man, identified as a man in his 50s, was arrested and taken away from the scene.
