Old drive-in opens with Harry Potter double-feature on Memorial Day
GOLETA, Calif. - Movie fans returned to the old drive-in theater in Goleta on Memorial Day.
Monday night's feature was the first time the Drive-In has shown a film since its closure last year in April.
West Wind Drive-In announced it would be reopening the Goleta theater on Saturday, after Supervisor Gregg Hart gave the operator the green light under phase-2 of the public health order.
But the theatre didn't close down because of the coronavirus, it closed last spring without revealing the details of what might be developed.
Since the screen was never torn down it was ready for showtime.
But the concession stand isn't open, so people brought their own homemade popcorn.
It's cash only or abour $8.75 per person, rather than car. One parked drivers tuned their car radios to a spot on the FM dial to listen to the movies.
The drive-in will show "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" at 8:30 pm and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," at 11:20 p.m. again on Tuesday.
Admission for kids ages 5 to 11 is $2 and children 4 and under get in for free.
The Drive-In is located at 907 S. Kellogg Ave in Goleta right next to Highway 217.
