San Luis Obispo cuts ribbon at Fremont Theater mural

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – San Luis Obispo is celebrating a new vibrant mural on display in the downtown area.

The mural is on the back of the Fremont Theater on Higuera Street.

It was created as part of the city's Public Art Program which aims to provide public art to the city. The city says it sets aside 1% of its capital improvements budget for public art projects.

As of July 2021, the City of San Luis Obispo works with the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art to coordinate the projects.

The mural covers two walls in the parking lot behind the historic theater. It was designed by Boston-based multimedia artist Maria Molteni.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday to honor the completion of the public art project.
