Pismo Beach Fourth of July fireworks show canceled
PISMO BEACH, Calif. - One of the premier summer celebrations on the Central Coast has been canceled due to COVID-19.
The City of Pismo Beach has canceled their annual July 4 fireworks show.
Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce announced on Facebook Thursday that the City had decided to pull the plug on the annual tradition.
The decision comes as the state grapples with the speed of which to reopen amid an ongoing pandemic.
Large crowds and gatherings are expected to be permitted once San Luis Obispo County has reached Phase 3 in their reopening plan. Currently, the County has not yet begun Phase 1 of their plan.
This decision was based upon the County’s reopening plan and what phase we might be in come July. You can see this plan at www.readyslo.org.

Unfortunately large crowds, like those we would see at the 4th, will not be allowed until Phase 3. We are not yet in Phase 1 of this plan.
The City ultimately has the power to make the decision regarding the fireworks show. While the decision was likely difficult to make and hard for many local residents to stomach, it's not entirely unexpected as a number of high-profile events throughout the tri-counties have been canceled.
Lompoc's Flower Festival and the Ventura County Fair have all been announced as canceled in recent weeks. Decisions regarding major events like the California Mid-state Fair in Paso Robles and Old Spanish Days Fiesta in Santa Barbara have yet to be made.
