GROVER BEACH, Calif. - A long-planned hotel project is all set to begin construction in Grover Beach.

The City of Grover Beach announced recently a Springhill Suites by Marriott hotel will start this month.

"The South County Chambers is pleased to see the new hotel breaking ground in Grover Beach," said Kathy McCorry, South County Chambers of Commerce CEO. "Springhill Suites will bring additional guests to the city increasing business in our local hotels and attractions. This is an exciting time for Grover Beach as they work diligently with their partners to increase the economic opportunities for our residents and our businesses. South County Chambers is also the management team for visit Grover Beach and as such we will follow this hotel and others in the pipeline as the city of Grover Beach continues to welcome visitors to our beautiful community."

The new hotel location is at 950 El Camino Real, adjacent to Oxford Suites, just east of the busy Five Cities Drive and North 4th Street intersection.

The project has been in the works for many years, dating all the way back to 2007. Over the past several years, the hotel has undergone many different design concepts.

"We're very excited about this new hotel in Grover Beach opening up," said Grover Beach City Manager Matt Bronson. It's 130 rooms. It's 15 years in the making. The project was first approved in 2007. It was started shortly after that and then the developer at that time went bankrupt and a new developer came on board to pick up the project and bring it to fruition with construction within the next week."

According to the City, Excel Hotel Group acquired the property in 2021 and has been working closely with Grover Beach staff to complete the required planning and approvals needed to finally start construction.

Bronson stressed the hotel will help reach its goal of improving economic development and community promotion.

"Having another hotel in our city is a key aspect of that goal," said Bronson. "We haven't had a new hotel in many, many years in Grover Beach. It will bring in roughly $400-to-$500,000 annually in hotel tax revenue. It adds local jobs to community and it gives another place for visitors to come into and enjoy our beautiful community."

Bronson added Springhill Suites is actually the first of several hotel projects that are in various stages of development in the city.

"We have other projects that are in the beachfront area that is owned by California State Parks that is an active development project," said Bronson. "We have another hotel project on El Camino Real. All these projects together will help bring in additional visitors, additional tax revenue and additional vitality to our beautiful community."

Bronson also gave an update on the long-planned Grover Beach Lodge project, which has been discussed for more than 20 years.

"It's an active development project," said Bronson. "It's a public-private partnership between California State Parks, the City of Grover Beach and a private developer. The developer submitted final plans at the end of 2022. State Parks and the City are reviewing the plans and we are submitting the comments back to the developer. No timeline yet on construction, but that project is very active and that would be another 150 rooms coming into the community and really adding to the economic vitality that we have."

Work on the Springhill Suites hotel is expected to take about 18 months and should be ready to open in early 2025.
