Forward progress of Soda Fire burning in California Valley stopped

The Soda Fire burning in the California Valley has burned about 50 acres with potential to grown bigger.

CALIFORNIA VALLEY, Calif. - A vegetation fire that sparked in the California Valley burned more than 1,100 acres and threatened structures before it forward progress was stopped Wednesday evening.

The Soda Fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. at the 11500 block Highway 58, burning on both sides of the highway.

Air support responded and determined that the fire had burned dozens of acres and was moving at a moderate rate of spread with potential to burn up to 200 acres.

At around 3 p.m., the fire had split into two separate incidents. One of the incidents was burning about 4 acres and was threatening multiple structures.

The second portion of the fire had burned more than 500 acres.

Tankers were diverted from the larger fire to respond to the smaller fire that was threatening structures.

By around 5:15 p.m., CAL FIRE said forward progress on the fire was stopped and firefighters were able to increase containment to 50%.

Equipment and crews will remain on scene throughout the night to work on containment and mop up any hot spots, CAL FIRE said.
