SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Firefighters responded to a call regarding a vegetation fire at the Irish Hills Natural Reserve between Los Osos Valley Road and Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo.

The call went out around 5:05 p.m.

CHP said callers report seeing the flames and smoke from Highway 101. The fire appears to be near the top of the hills.

Multiple engines and trucks are on scene. SLO City Fire sent a helicopter to help battle the burn from the air while firefighters attack on the ground.

As of 5:50 p.m., CAL FIRE reported the fire was being held at about one-eighth of an acre with a very slow rate of spread. However, wind speeds of up to 19 miles per hour in the area were a concern.

At about 6:25 p.m., San Luis Obispo City Fire reported that the fire was contained to a 40-by-40-foot in area. Water drops are continuing to be made by a Los Padres National Forest helicopter to keep it contained.

Firefighters will remain on scene for at least the next two hours.

A video of one helicopter in action can be viewed on CAL FIRE's Twitter.

After investigating, SLO firefighters determined that this fire was caused by an abandoned campfire that was lit in an unauthorized area.
