Firefighters tackle vegetation fire at Twitchell Dam near Santa Maria

SANTA MARIA VALLEY, Calif. - Santa Barbara County and CAL FIRE firefighters responded to a vegetation fire near the Twitchell Dam on the Cuyama River east of Santa Maria around 6:23 p.m Saturday evening.

The fire is burning off White Rock Lane near the border between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Fire crews are attacking the fire from both the ground with hoses and the air with helicopters.

SBC Fire reported that the fire has burned 75 acres as of 8 p.m. They said it is spreading at a slow to moderate rate. Control of the fire is expected soon.

Firefighters say warm 79-degree temperatures and 22 mile per hour winds may influence this fire's behavior.

No structures are threatened by the fire at this time and no injuries have been reported.

CHP is restricting traffic around the fire, drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
