SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A non-profit in San Luis Obispo is raising funds to protect vital services for survivors of abuse, and the public can help.

According to the CDC, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men are victims of some form of physical violence by a partner at some point during their lifetimes.

And men and women alike experience sexual abuse and stalking.

San Luis Obispo county non-profit Lumina Alliance is concerned about being able to continue offering their supportive services.

“Lumina Alliance is the only organization in San Luis Obispo County that our only focus is victims of domestic violence and sexual assault,” says Jennifer Adams, Lumina Alliance C.E.O.

That 1-in-4 national statistic for women would translate to roughly 35,000 women in San Luis Obispo county alone, to say nothing of similar abuses on 26% of children nationally, or 13,000 children in the county.

“Almost half of the people that stayed in our shelters and transitional housing units last year were children,” says Adams.

Federal cuts are threatening half of Lumina Alliance’s funding which goes to their emergency shelters, intervention resources, and therapy services.

“Our crisis line has been in operation for almost 50 years without a break in service, and we're really proud of that,” says Susan Lamont, Lumina Alliance C.P.O.

To combat this, Lumina Alliance is launching a $5 million, three-year fundraising campaign called “Light the Way."

“Supporting the Light The Way campaign is more than just a donation. It's a lifeline to these victims that need these services,” says Adams.
