Santa Barbara apartment residents evacuated due to gas leak
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Some apartment complex residents were evacuated on Philinda Avenue Wednesday morning after a gas leak was detected outside the building.
Santa Barbara City Fire said it started around 10:26 a.m. on the 900 block of Philinda.
While the gas leak occurred outside the apartment, crews said wind was blowing it toward the structure.
Investigators determined the gas line was struck during construction that was taking place between two apartment buildings.
City Fire said about 12 people were being evacuated from both buildings out of an abundance of caution.
The gas company responded to the area and said it would be about one hour before the gas could be shut off. NewsChannel 3 is also at the scene.
Fire engines will remain on scene until the leak is fixed.
The 900 block of North Milpas Street and Philinda were temporarily closed by police so that trucks could access the area.
No injuries were reported.
