Solvang City Council Recall Election

Why are you running for office?: | Current Solvang Councilman Chris Djernaes is facing a recall vote in the November election. Two candidates, myself included, are running to fill that position should the recall be successful. Without getting into the actions that caused the recall petition to be successfully filed, this is my promise to the citizens of Solvang: I will treat every person doing business with the City with respect and I will seek opinions from all who offer them because, in reality, that is what we should be elected to do. |
What makes you qualified for the job?: | I was employed by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department for 29 years. For the last 12 of those years, I was the elected Sheriff-Coroner. Between 1993 and 1996, I was simultaneously appointed as the County Fire Chief. I worked with the cities of Carpinteria, Buellton, and Goleta in setting up contract law enforcement services which continue to exist to this day. I also worked extensively with the Board of Supervisors during those times. |
What are your two main priorities if you win?: | My first priority will be to help the new Council re-establish trust with the community. My second priority will be to govern in a way that takes care of our citizens, our city workers and our infrastructure. Tourism is the “life blood” of Solvang and needs to be maintained, ensuring that we will leave our children with a safe environment and vibrant economy. |
How will you interact with other governments?: | I personally know many of the county's government leaders and believe we will have a mutually beneficial relationship. |
What are your plans to help overcome COVID-19?: | At this point, I believe we are bound to follow the guidelines set up by our governing agencies. I am hopeful that a medical solution will be found in the near future. |
Which two issues are most important to you?: | 1. Credibility and approachability. Trust in our local government is imperative, especially during these tumultuous times. 2. Helping to "retain the essence of Solvang." What is that? Well, I believe it is the obligation of the City Council, to ensure that Solvang adheres to what the Founders envisioned - a Danish community that welcomes visitors who feel they are blessed to share a small part of the Danish history while being able to enjoy the variety of shops and traditional eateries in a safe and welcoming environment. |
