San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s identify dead inmate, cause of death pending
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office reports that an inmate died on Monday evening in San Luis Obispo jail.
The inmate was identified as Gregory Louis Trujillo, 62, Nipomo.
On Monday around 6:40 p.m., Trujillo suffered a suspected medical issue an hour and a half after arriving at the jail.
He died in the Intake/Release area of the jail.
Trujillo was arrested for suspected DUI at 3:10 p.m. Monday in front of Nipomo Elementary School.
Trujillo was transported to a local hospital for a DUI blood draw, medical exam and clearance for booking.
After being medically cleared, he was transported to jail.
He arrived at around 6:40 p.m. where he was processed and remained in the Intake area pending release.
Officials say he did not complain nor had any indication that he was feeling ill.
At 8:15 p.m., one of the inmates in the holding cell with Trujillo alerted staff of something wrong with Trujillo.
Medical staff and custody staff immediately rendered medical aid but were unable to save him.
The Sheriff's Office Coroners Unit, Detective Unit and the District Attorney's Office are investigating the death.
Officials say no foul play is suspected, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
Trujillo's next of kin has been notified.
