Special tax proposed for emergency medical and fire services for Oceano

A public hearing on a special tax proposal for Oceano happened Wednesday night.

The public hearing approved a resolution to put a new measure on the ballot for the March 3, 2020 election.

The new measure would be a special tax for emergency medical and fire protection services.

This would be for voters within the district boundaries.

The proposed ordinance includes options on how the tax would be established.

One would be to establish special tax on all parcels in Oceano equally called a “flat tax”.

Or, establish a special tax. This one would be based on “land-use”.

In both cases for Oceano, the amount of the tax for a single-family home is proposed to be the same.

The amount would be about $15 per month, or $180 per year.

The taxes would be collected on property tax bills.

The hope is that a special tax election for fire and emergency services would promote a well governed community.
