Santa Maria-Bonita School District discusses potential rezoning at board meeting

The Santa Maria-Bonita School District addressed the possibility of redistricting during a meeting on Wednesday evening.

While board members discussed the possibility of redistricting, they emphasized that this is a concept that’s very much in its preliminary stage.

It was also a chance for board members to get information about potential changes to the boundaries.

“We’re going to be opening up a new school in the year 2020. A lot of people have been seeing the new school go up near the Costco area,” said spokesperson Maggie White with the Santa Maria-Bonita School District.

In addition to creating boundaries for the new school, the district will also look into long-term solutions to current boundary issues.

“We want to make sure the schools are balanced in size,” White said.

“Our thinking was to share the strategies on how we might change the boundaries. But we haven’t done the detailed work as far as identifying what streets we might move to what school,” said Deputy Superintendent Matt Beecher.

“We want to make sure we have the best schools that our community needs for our students and our staff,” White said.

The next step is to continue their research and to include additional steak holders.
