SoCal Edison considering power outages in Santa Barbara, Ventura counties this week

Some Southern California Edison customers in Santa Barbara County could have their power turned off this week.

The utility announced on its website Wednesday afternoon that 240 SoCal Edison customers in unincorporated areas of Gaviota and Concepcion could be impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

The utility did not release a timeline for when the shutoffs could take place, but SCE has told our newsroom that it typically tries to give at least 48 hours notice to customers when it is considering a power outage.

More than 94,000 customers in Ventura County were also included in the new round of potential power outages, including people in Ventura, Camarillo, and Fillmore, as well as unincorporated areas of El Rio, and Santa Paula.

The utility company said nearly 310,000 customers in seven counties were under consideration for power shutoffs.

Over the weekend, SCE had said it was considering power shutoffs in southern Santa Barbara County, but it didn’t end up happening.

In Northern California, PG&E said Wednesday morning that it was moving forward with power shutoffs for some 179,000 customers.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs are designed to prevent utility equipment from sparking wildfires during windy, hot, and dry conditions. The idea was proposed after both PG&E and SoCal Edison were blamed for sparking recent devastating wildfires across the state, including the Thomas Fire which burned in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
