Former Santa Maria Uber driver pleads guilty to raping passenger

A former Santa Maria Uber driver has been sentenced to one year in county jail after pleading guilty Thursday to raping an intoxicated passenger.

Authorities say the assault happened inside his car.

Shadi Aziz Abdul, 37, was identified as a suspect in April after the victim came forward. In May, Abdul was taken into custody at the Mexican border and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Prosecutors asked Abdul Aziz be sentenced to one year in jail, five years of felony probation and register as a sex offender for life.
