Coastal clean up day brings more than one thousand volunteers in San Luis Obispo

If you toss out cigarette butts you might be part of the problem.

During a Coastal clean up day on September 21st in San Luis Obispo County, volunteers picked up almost 25 thousand butts.

They weighed the trash and it weighed more than 16,000 pounds. They found 63 thousand pieces of trash and recyclable materials!

In addition to cigarette buttes they found bottle caps, straws, food wrappers and glass.

With 44 of the 48 sites reporting on data, the Top 10 trash items picked up were:

1. Cigarette butts: 24,977
2. Pieces of plastic: 8,138
3. Food wrappers: 6,526
4. Glass pieces: 2,682
5. Plastic bottle caps: 2,579
6. Pieces of foam: 1,850
7. Metal bottle caps: 1,810
8. Plastic beverage bottles: 1,589
9. Straws & stirrers: 1,219
10. Beverage cans: 1,185
