Driver killed in crash near Avila Beach

One person was killed in a crash near Avila Beach Tuesday morning.

He is identified as Arturo Estrada-Aguilera, 44, of Guadalupe.

San Luis Obispo California Highway Patrol closed the Highway 101 offramp at Avila Beach Drive due to the crash.

Around 9:40 a.m. a gray 2000 Jeep Cherokee was driving northbound on Highway 101 in the left lane at 70 to 75 mph.

According to CHP, witnesses said the Cherokee abruptly crossed both the northbound lanes, went across the paved right shoulder and exited the highway down into a steep embankment.

The Cherokee continued and crossed the northbound Avila Beach Drive offramp and then crashed into a tree.

Estrada-Aguilera died at the scene.

San Luis Obispo CHP said it appears that he was not wearing a seat belt.
