Atascadero police on scene of standoff

The Atascadero Police Department responded to a report of a barricaded suspect on Friday.

Police responded to the 7300 block of Cristobal Avenue at around 1:50 p.m. for a report of a disturbance between a man and his father.

The man told police that his father had been drinking and was possibly suicidal while in possession of a firearm. The man said he tried to take the firearm from his father but his father refused, leading to a struggle.

At least one shot was fired during the struggle, police said.

The man left the home but his father stayed inside.

Police attempted to make contact with the man with loud speakers in hopes of convincing him to peacefully surrender to law enforcement.

The Atascadero Police Department is on the scene as well as the San Luis Obispo County SWAT team.
