Prescribed burn underway at Santa Maria Airport

A prescribed burn took place at the Santa Maria Airport Thursday morning.

The Santa Maria City Fire Department, in coordination with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, conducted the planned burning to mitigate future fire risk related to pyrotechnic displays at the Central Coast Airfest.

The burn began at 9 a.m. and was expected to continue until around 6 p.m. Thursday evening.,

People in the area may smell smoke and they are encouraged to take the proper precautions to protect themselves from exposure. That includes closing windows and doors and avoiding strenuous activity outside while the burn is taking place. Those precautions are especially important for young children and elderly adults.
