Crews to begin re-straightening Shell Beach Road

Construction crews are beginning the process of re-straightening Shell Beach Road in Shell Beach this week.

For the last several months, the busy road showcased an unusual set of curved striping and was jokingly referred to as Lombard Street of the Central Coast.

The unusual zigzag striping formation was done to give construction crews space while installing underground power and water lines. It’s a project that had been in the works for over 20 years, city officials said.

The curvy striping was also used to preserve existing parking spaces.

Traffic was slowed at times during this phase of the project and left many locals confused about the project.

On Thursday, crews began the process of repaving the road and returning it back to normal, removing the old striping and replacing it with the familiar straight lines.

The full project will be completed next August.
