Structure fire destroys mobile home, damages another in Avila Beach

A structure fire at a senior mobile home park in Avila Beach destroyed one house and badly damaged another Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m in the Indian Hill 55 Plus Community.

The park is located just off of San Luis Bay Drive in the Avila Beach area.

According to CAL FIRE, the 91-year-old homeowner heard a loud popping sound and discovered the house was on fire.

He was able to make it out safety and was uninjured.

Once firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered a home fully engulfed in flames on Valley View Lane.

CAL FIRE firefighters, along with assistance from the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department, worked quickly to put out the blaze.

Due to the wind, one of the neighboring mobile homes caught fire, suffering significant outside damage.

In addition, the fire jumped the street and moved into vegetation on a hillside.

“(The fire) posed a significant danger,” said CAL FIRE public information officer Adan Orozco. “There’s a lot of pine trees in that section of the flower bed with a lot of pine needles on the ground and those pine needles helped carry that fire up the hill towards the next house and firefighters were able to put that out before it reached the bottom of their deck.”

Within an hour, the fire was put out, but the house was destroyed.

No cause has been determined.

Orozco added that the close proximity of a CAL FIRE station to the mobile home park assisted in keeping damages to a minimum.

“It was extremely helped for our Avila fire station to be right outside the gate of this subdivision,” said Orozco. “As the firefighters received their 911 call, homeowners were actually knocking on the door to notify them of the fire as well, so those firefighters were able to get on scene within four minutes.”

One firefighter was injured during the response.

He was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for a burned shoulder.
