Santa Barbara couple killed in Idaho plane crash remembered for giving back
Carl and Joanne Lindros’ oldest son Randy flew to Idaho to identify his parents remains following a fiery plane crash. He said all he could find to confirm their deaths was their wedding rings and his father’s wristwatch.
Randy Lindros traveled to Idaho alone after learning their plane went down late Sunday morning near Kooskia.
He said they were flying in his father’s Lancair IV aircraft from Montana to Sacramento to visit his sister.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause.
Friends said Carl learned to fly at age 12 and helped build the plane that they kept at the Oxnard Airport.
Andy Fuller who works at Santa Barbara Securities said, “I have flown with him a number of times, and he really was an excellent pilot.”
Fuller described them as active and involved in the community.
“I know Carl enjoyed and had been giving to a lot of the local foundations for quite some time.”
Jo volunteered for PATH, Trader Joe’s food delivery program and Cottage Hospital.
Carl described by his son Randy as a serial entrepreneur and savant had an MBA from UCLA.
He donated his leadership to Cottage Hospital and the UCSB endowment.
Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara staff combed through scrapbooks full of photos that tracked their generosity.
COO Barbara Robertson said, “He was supposed to be at a meeting here tomorrow, our assets were $500,000 to $700,000 and now they are nearly $50 million and Carl’s been instrumental in helping us steward the money and get large donors.”
At 83, they both liked to walk 18 holes rather than ride in the golf cart.
Carl still loved to go to work at his Santa Barbara Securities office.
In addition to four children raised in Santa Barbara, the Lindros’ are survived by 11 grandchildren –some are being raised in Carpinteria.
There is already a scholarship named after Carl’s mother and there may be more to honor them.
Randy Lindros said when he gets back they will hold a massive celebration of his parents’ lives.
