Officer-Involved shooting at Ventura County Government Center

Ventura Police officials have released sparse but new information about Monday morning’s shooting at the Ventura County Government Center at 800 S. Victoria Ave. in Ventura.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is now heading up the investigation.

The incident began as a traffic stop by a sergeant with the Ventura Police Department and involved a vehicle that police said was related to “an ongoing threats” call.

A woman who saw the events leading up to the shooting called NewsChannel 3 and said a police officer pulled the car over and the man driving the car got out, and very quickly, the situation escalated into a fight between the two men. The woman said saw the police officer shoot the man he had pulled over.

Ventura Police confirm that the driver of that vehicle was a 37-year-old man, his name has not yet been released.

The sergeant was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and the suspect with critical injuries.

Crime scene tape remains up around multiple cars in parking Lot C where the shooting occurred.

The Ventura County Government Center is where county business, jury duty, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department are all located. A county jail is also on the premises.

We have a reporter on scene and will update this story as more information becomes available.
