Cal Poly Police evacuate part of campus after unknown hazardous substance found

(Update 2:52 p.m.) Hazmat and Cal Poly emergency services personnel identified the unknown substance as hot water from the central plant boiler.

The cause of the leak remains under investigation.

All road closures have been lifted and the evacuated buildings will reopen by 3:30 p.m.

(Update 2:40 p.m.) San Luis Obispo Fire Chief Keith Aggson says the call for the hazmat response came in around 11:45 Monday morning.

A student reported a yellowish substance that had a weird odor and left an odd taste in his mouth.

Firefighters say there weren’t many students or teachers on campus at the time because they had the day off.

But about a dozen people were evacuated.

Paramedics checked out the student who reported the substance, and said he seems fine.

His shoes were taken as evidence though because he stepped in the substance.
