New season of Hearst Castle evening tours announced

A new season of Hearst Castle’s evening tours in San Luis Obispo County will begin on Friday.

Guests will be able to visit the Castle illuminated at night.

According to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the evening tours feature the Living History Program, which evokes the heyday of the estate.

Docents in attire from the 1930s recreate a sense of the social life of William Randolph Hearst’s guests, as they socialize in the Assembly Room or other areas of the Castle. Other tour guides portray household staff attending to the needs of Mr. Hearst’s guests.

The evening tour progresses from Casa del Mar (one of the guest houses) to the main rooms and kitchen of Casa Grande, the main house.

The tour continues upstairs through the main library and Mr. Hearst’s private Gothic Suite. Completing the 100-minute tour with a visit to the indoor Roman Pool with its blue and gold mosaics.

Spring evening tours are conducted on most Friday and Saturday nights, through May 18 and mid-week nights during spring break from April 15 through April 25.

The department suggests that visitors arrive 15 minutes before their tour time and allow two hours and ten minutes for this tour.

Evening Tour prices are $36 for adults and $18 for youth ages 5-12. Advance reservations can be made online or by calling 800-444-4445.
