Two killed, another seriously injured in crash on 101 south of Buellton

Two people were killed and another was seriously injured following a multi-vehicle crash on US 101 south of Buellton Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred just before 12:30 p.m. in the northbound lane of US 101, according to the California Highway Patrol log.

According to Santa Barbara County Fire Public Information Officer Mike Eliason, a 48-year-old woman from Porterville was driving a Honda element heading south. The vehicle hydroplaned and lost control, crashing into the center divider and into the northbound lane. A Jeep Grand Cherokee going northbound collided with the Element after it crossed over the divider.

The driver of the Element died on impact.

A 75-year-old male passenger in the Jeep also died on impact. The driver of the Jeep, a 65-year-old suffered serious injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. Both were from Buellton.

Major extrication was required to remove the driver of the Jeep. She was transported to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara via emergency medical helicopter.

A dog that was riding in the Jeep also died at the scene.

Multiple lanes on the northbound side of the roadway were closed.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
