Former San Luis Obispo priest accused of sexual assault

The Monterey Diocese which covers San Luis Obispo County has released a list identifying every clergyman they say is credibly accused of sexual abuse.

Former Mission San Luis Obispo Priest Alberto Battagliola was among the names listed. He was accused of sexual misconduct in the 1970s but it wasn’t reported until 2003. Battagliola died in 1977.

In total 30 clergymen are accused of sexual misconduct with minors, the most recent dating back to 2009.

None of the people listed are still working for the diocese. Many of them are deceased.

The release of the report follows a lawsuit which accused ten dioceses in California of covering up sexual abuse.

The Monterey Diocese declined to comment on the release of Wednesday’s report.
