Orcutt family welcomes their Baby New Year

From Auld Lang Syne to lullabies, at least three babies made their debuts in Santa Barbara County on New Year’s Day.

An Orcutt couple just welcomed Santa Maria’s first baby of 2019. Savanna Esquivel and Cam Allen are ringing in the New Year with a new life.

“The ball dropped and I started screaming because the contractions got even stronger. The nurses heard me, they came in and said oh you’re going to be ready to push soon,” said Esquivel.

The proud parents were anticipating a Christmas arrival but baby Xyla wasn’t ready to make her grand entrance until 2:27 a.m. early New Year’s Day.

“I was shocked because it was already past 2 o’clock and she [the nurse] said you’re in the running, the other girls they’re not even close to where you’re at and I was like all right lay back and we’re going to get this done,” said Esquivel.

The 7.5 lbs. 20-inch bundle of joy didn’t waste any time.

“She came within a couple of minutes, wow, yeah, less than five minutes,” said Esquivel.

While many were busy attending parties and watching fireworks in the sky, this little sparkler is already daddy’s little girl.

“We’re number one, champs, she’s a champ,” said Allen, when asked about having one of the first babies of the New Year.

With a seven, six and one-and-a-half-year-old already at home, the now parents of four lightheartedly say, as far as resolutions go, they’re focusing on surviving and sleeping.

“We are just so blessed to have two boys and two girls at home. We’re excited, we’re happy,” said Esquivel.

It appears Santa Barbara County’s first 2019 newborn said hello to the world roughly 10 minutes before Xyla at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

A release from the hospital says Bodie Laim was born at 2:16 a.m. weighing in at 6 lbs., 12 oz. and was 20.5 inches long.

He’s the first child for parents Jamie Cherry and Glen Morden, who are from Carpinteria.
