Solvang bans smoking in most public areas

The city of Solvang is banning smoking in most public areas.

The ordinance change goes into effect Thursday. Previously, Solvang followed the state law, which is less strict.

Any kind of smoking — including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping and marijuana — is no longer allowed in public areas like sidewalks, parks, outdoor eating areas and bus stops in the city’s main commercial center.

Smoking is still allowed in city parking lots. The city plans to install more ashtrays in those lots and additional “no smoking” signage. Solvang also plans to give out “no smoking” window decals to local businesses that want them.

Solvang City Council decided to change the ordinance last month. The move comes after the American Lung Association gave Solvang an Overall Tobacco Control Grade of ‘F’ this year. The city began discussing additional limitations on smoking in public areas over the summer.

“Mainly, it was to keep the tourists when they’re walking through the sidewalks and those types of areas, public restrooms, to keep those smoke free,” city manager Brad Vidro said. “I think it’s gonna take a little time for the public to fully be aware of the new rules.”

Those caught violating the new ordinance could face a citation and a $100 fine.
