Soccer fans flock to UCSB for College Cup

Soccer fans came out to UC Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium on Sunday night to watch the NCAA College Cup Championship Match between Akron and Maryland.

One group of Maryland fans, known as “The Crew,” hung a large banner showing the different locations around the country where they’ve traveled to watch the Terrapins play.

“Unbelievable weather, unbelievable experience.” Maryland fan Austin Bartolomei-Hill said about their time in Santa Barbara.

Meanwhile, Akron fans came in hoping to rekindle the same magic the Zips enjoyed when they won the championship in 2010, which was the last time UCSB hosted the College Cup.

“Got the ring [then], back for another,” said Tom Gorchoff, who was attending the game with his friend Doug Glenn.

Southern California native Dylan Barnhart said he was rooting for Akron and confident after the team’s 5-1 win over Michigan State in Friday night’s semifinal.

Maryland won the Championship Match, 1-0.
