Driver killed in head-on crash near Guadalupe identified

The California Highway Patrol identified the driver killed in a head-on crash in Guadalupe as 45-year-old Francisco Mejia of Santa Maria.

CHP says Mejia was driving westbound on Betteravia Road approaching the intersection with Brown Road at an unknown speed when for unknown reasons he turned to the left directly into the oncoming path of another vehicle that had just entered the intersection.

The second driver applied the brakes but it was too late, according to CHP.

Both vehicles came to rest in the middle of the intersection. The force of the impact caused Mejia to suffer fatal injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
