Driver killed in head-on crash near Guadalupe identified

–UPDATE–

The California Highway Patrol identified the driver killed in a head-on crash in Guadalupe as 45-year-old Francisco Mejia of Santa Maria.

CHP says Mejia was driving westbound on Betteravia Road approaching the intersection with Brown Road at an unknown speed when for unknown reasons he turned to the left directly into the oncoming path of another vehicle that had just entered the intersection.

The second driver applied the brakes but it was too late, according to CHP.

Both vehicles came to rest in the middle of the intersection. The force of the impact caused Mejia to suffer fatal injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

INITIAL INFORMATION

Authorities are investigating after a man was killed in a head-on car crash south of Guadalupe Tuesday morning.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the accident was reported just before 6:15 a.m. Tuesday on W. Betteravia Road near Brown Road when a male driver of a sedan collided with a male pickup driver.

The driver of the sedan was killed on impact. The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries and were not transported, the fire department said.

The identity of the deceased has been released. It is unclear what caused the collision.
