Santa Maria police detain suspect in reported shooting

Santa Maria police have detained a suspect believed to be involved in a shooting in the area of the 200 block of West Mill Street.

The incident was reported at about 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. SMPD tweeted that the suspect, described as a Hispanic man, was detained soon after officers were dispatched to the scene to investigate reports of gunshots fired from a vehicle in the West Mill Street area.

No injuries were reported. Police say the area is now safe and there is no immediate danger to the public.

A resident told Reporter Nathalie Vera that the suspect knew someone that lived in the neighborhood and was living in his car for over a year, and believes he may be suffering from mental illness. A pickup truck believed to belong to the suspect was towed from the scene.
